If You Care Compostable Trash Bags & Bin Liners are made from potato starch from non-GMO starch potatoes blended with a certified, fully compostable polymer. No plasticizers are added.

What Makes Potato Starch Strong?

Starch is a mixture of a linear (amylose) and a branched (amylopectin) polymer of glucose. Potato starch has a higher percentage of amylopectin than either corn or wheat starch. Amylopectin gives starch its structural integrity, so it helps make If You Care Compostable Trash Bags stronger than bags made from corn starch.

Any Other Reasons for Potato Starch?

The potato starch used to make If You Care Compostable Trash Bags comes from starch potatoes, which are not grown as a food source, but only for starch production. These potatoes are too high in starch to be good for food. Therefore, there is no diversion from food supplies. In addition, to produce the same amount of starch from these potatoes as from corn requires 40% less land. Other compostable bags are made from corn which requires more water, but potatoes require no irrigation, and need only normal rainfall.

Why Use If You Care Compostable Trash Bags?

Approximately 80 million tons of waste (U.S. EPA figures) which goes to landfill annually is material which under the right conditions, can be turned into compost, including food scraps, yard trimmings and non-recyclable paper. In a landfill environment, this trapped organic material (leaves, grass etc.) releases methane gas – a greenhouse gas – contributing to global warming. Diverting food scraps and yard trimmings from landfill to compost facilities – either municipal or commercial in areas where available – contributes significantly to preserving our planet and natural resources.

If You Care Compostable Trash Bags Bin Liners are completely polyethylene free and do not contain plasticizers.

Compostable Vs. Biodegradable Garbage Bags

PLA trash bag (4)

For starters, not all degradable trash bags are created equal—and to that end, “biodegradable” and “compostable” aren’t interchangeable terms. The term “biodegradable” is often thrown around for marketing purposes, although certain plastics are engineered to degrade in water and soil. But for a material to be deemed compostable (that is, it will degrade into soil conditioning material), it needs to be able to break down in an industrial composting facility in a relatively short amount of time. For this reason, you’ll want to look for BPI Certified Compostable bags.

Another important caveat here is that while many biodegradable or compostable bags can break down in ideal conditions, they have trouble degrading in landfills, where oxygen is scarce, and temperatures aren’t ideal for decomposition. But they still fare better than single-use plastic bags, which can take hundreds of years to decompose in any conditions—and when they do, can release microplastics into our waterways and oceans.

Frequently Asked Questions: Compostable Trash Bags

Are there biodegradable trash bags?

Most trash bags are not biodegradable. A better option is compostable trash bags. Compostable Trash Bags will break down in under 180 days in a commercial compost facility. These garbage bags are tested and certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute to meet ASTM standards.

Do compostable trash bags work?

Yes, compostable garbage bags are certified and designed to break down into compost. Compostable trash bags are tested and certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute to break down in under 180 days in a commercial compost facility.

Are there environmentally friendly trash bags?

Yes, Compostable Garbage Bags are environmentally friendly. Unlike regular trash bags, compostable trash bags are plant-based and are certified compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute.

Are compostable trash bags biodegradable in a landfill?

No, compostable bags will not break down in a landfill. Compostable Garbage Bags are intended to be disposed of in a commercial composting facility. In commercial compost, the temperature, moisture, and oxygen are controlled so that the compostable bags break down properly and within the required time.

What are biodegradable trash bags?

What are Biodegradable Garbage Bags? Biodegradable trash bags are those trash bags that are made using bioplastics or other plant-based starches and materials. Bioplastics are a blend of organic components that mirror the characteristics of traditional plastics made from petroleum

How long do biodegradable bags last?

Biodegradable plastics take three to six months to decompose fully. That's much quicker than synthetic counterparts that take several hundred years. Exactly how long a biodegradable bag takes to break down depends on various factors, such as temperature and the amount of moisture present.
